Gratitude – 50 Things I am Thankful For

Share if you dare:

Gratitude is an amazing thing. Did you know that having sincere emotions of gratitude has a calming effect on the mind and body? There is evidence showing that when we bring attention to the things we appreciate in our life, we are more susceptible to catching the positivity virus. Oh no! Gratitude breeds positive emotion which leads to a healthier mind and body, and leaves little room for negativity.  (Read The Power of Positivity)

Today is Thanksgiving, our national day for giving thanks, which is nice and all, but giving thanks is not an annual event. This is a practice that should be done daily, in fact, I prefer twice a day; once before getting out of bed, and once before pulling up the covers and drifting into dreamland. This ensures you start the day on the right side of the bed, and also clears out the mind-clutter before calling it a night. That’s a free 8 hours of overnight brain-time that could potentially train your brain to focus on the good things.

At a Thanksgiving dinner do you hear a lot of:

  • I’m thankful for uh… a roof over my head.
  • I’m thankful for this big juicy turkey that is about to enter my belly.
  • I’m thankful for the big screen TV I’ll be buying tomorrow on Black Friday.

Gratitude is more than listing items you think you should be thankful for, such as life’s necessities (shelter, food) or material desires (new TV).  Reach for a deeper level of gratitude and help yourself realize how much there is to be thankful for.  Gratefulness for basic physiological needs or material desires is not as emotionally impacting as gratefulness for your deep relationship with your partner or the satisfaction you get from a job well done.

Another type of gratitude is focused towards oneself. It may sound egotistical, but I assure you it’s not.  Be thankful for your strengths, accomplishments, and good traits.  Be thankful for having a body that can do so many things.  Be thankful if you can dance like John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever or are the reigning champ at Wii Bowling. Gratitude towards oneself leads to higher self-esteem, self-worth, and positive outlook on life.

Today, I have a challenge for you.  Let’s take some time to focus on what you are thankful for.  Sit down for 15 to 30 minutes, and make a list of at least 50 well thought-out things you are thankful for. Care to try for a hundred?

Now, choose your favorites and leave them in a comment to share with everyone!

To fulfill my end of the challenge, here is a list of 50 things I’m thankful for:
